Are we headed toward a major confrontation with Russia? (enemies, military, dollars)

I have no idea, but hopefully Obama doesn't let Putin shove him around. My suspicion is that Putin will have an easier time intimidating Obama than he would have with McCain, which is one of the central reasons I supported McCain.
However, now that he is elected, hopefully Obama will surprise me and show more of a backbone than I suspect he actually has.
Have you heard of an EMP pulse... It's tasteless, odorless, invisible....
Google EMP and see how it is known by every think tank as thee Greatest threat to America.

Oh noes, the positrons are coming!!!
No, seriously this is plausible.
Remember the blackouts in the Northeast awhile back? That is about 80% of the reason that I voted for Obama. We need to re-engineer our infrastructure. We can "shield" ourselves from such possible scenarios.
As per the OP, only time will tell. I doubt that Medvedev/Putin, whichever will be president by 09, will want to start a war. I do think that they will refuse to go away and it seems they would love to relive the cold war.
It gives me great comfort, however, that our Western European allies are solidly behind us. In the event of any major confrontation the US might face under President Barack Obama, our allies would fall in line due to the immense popularity of our president-elect in Europe. Even right-of-center leaders like Sarkozy, Angela Merkel, and British Tory leader David Cameron (in the event he becomes British PM) have a very close relationship with Obama, and that suggests a strong front against any perceived threat from Russia, Iran, Korea, etc...
I believe this was a factor which helped Mr. Obama to earn the endorsement of Collin Powell.
I did not vote for Mr. Obama. It was a very tough choice for me.
In a few weeks he will be the only President we have.
I think he'll do quite well.

As I can see from here it's the USA almost bankrupt, with great debts and panic about recession. Russia has proficit in budget and we are opening plants (even GM), not closing them. And I never hear regrets on crisis among my friend, and I have a lot of them, we only joking on this topic. You have too little information about Russia.
As for confrontation, I think it's an American doctrin about preventing war, and we saw it in Serbia, Afganistan and Iraq. You should never be afraid of Russia, you should be afraid of your not very clever politicians. Obama, to my mind, is quite clever. There will be no serious confrontation. Be happy.
Russia has been quieter lately with oil in the $50s.
