Here's what I don't get, the right preaches the constitution but doesn't want anyone to hold views opposite of their own. That is why McCarthy was wrong. He was anti-America because he went against the constitution. I don't care what Neo-Cons say.
The McCarthy gene apparently infected the Kennedy's. Were you aware that Robert kennedy was on his staff for a while and that he even godfathered one of Robert's kids? JFK was a staunch anti-communist, as well. In fact there was not much daylight between Democrats and Republicans on the issue of communism.
But as to the central point you raise the battle against communism was not a battle against ideas as such. There was no law against belonging to the CPUSA. In fact Gus Hall, the chairman of the CPUSA, regularly ran for president under the communist banner. What McCarthy and others resisted was militant communism that sought to infiltrate our government for purposes of stealing state secrets and influencing public policy. These clandestine communists and fellow travelers were, in fact and effect, agents of a foreign power, namely, the Soviet Union and, to a lesser degree, Communist China. McCarthy's mission was to expose these subversives and to root them out of the government. While he may have been over zealous, he was not paranoid. The Verona Papers made accessible after the fall of the Soviet empire, detail the extent of the Soviet infiltration of our government.
Now I have a question for you who see nothing wrong with communism. Why is it that communism always ends in totalitarianism?
The same reason Crony Capitalism always ends in Fascism.
Eventually the frightened power crazy thugs take over to protect themselves and their friends from the "opposition" no matter what the "opposition" is. Their fear of loss destroys their ability to think. They react to any dissent as an attack to be crushed. They destroy everything to remain safe in a world where safety is impossible.

FEAR has apparently addled the minds of many of our conservative posters. Just mentioning the 'fear' words of communism, socialism, immigrant, welfare and all the rest simply triggers an instant attack. They are always ready to protect the Kristian church, crony capitalism and our Sacred American Way of Life that never really existed. They pine for a day that never was.
Unfortunately for the rest of us that try and improve our living standard for all Americans it is far easier to sell fear then hope. That does not make our cause a lost cause it just makes it more difficult to achieve. I believe we can create an America with true "Liberty and Justice for All".
All we have to do is convince people to think about the candidates and stop reacting to the constant fear spread by the Republicans.

Easy, because we are a Corporatocracy and bureaucracy has too much of a stranglehold on this country.

Actually having illegal labor makes the minimum wage law a false wage floor....so naturally I would think that would push up the profit margin.
In addition, would you have to pay out benefits? It's usually something the average American demands.
