Why did President Bush seemingly give North Korea a pass after it detonated a fission device? North Korea was given the same warning as Iran and Iraq when it was named as a member of the "axis of evil" and that WMDs would not be tolerated in these nations.

Yet, Iraq gets invaded even though it had no WMDs. North Korea gave advance warnings that it would develop nukes, actually tests a bomb, launches delivery vehicles in a provocative manner, and...we step up diplomacy.

I'm not personally advocating military action against North Korea but why did the Bush doctrine apply to Iraq but not N. Korea?

This is the type of double standard that leads people to suspect that the President invaded Iraq for the oil or to avenge his father.

I'm just wondering how the administration let this happen? Was there absolutely no intelligence about the N. Korean weapons program?

The administration has been describing horror scenarios if Iran should develop a nuke but I recall that once news of N. Korea's test came out it faded into the background fairly quickly.

So would it be such a big deal if Iran does get a nuke? Or will we be able to live with it, just as we have with North Korea & Pakistan & India & Israel?

Is it our policy that a state may develop nuclear weapons as long as it withdraws from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty?

And doesn't this policy of, "once you get a nuke, we'll treat you with respect" just serve to encourage nations to get a nuke as soon as possible?

North Korea, Pakistan... but the country that had no hope was the one picked on. we sure showed them! Of course the Bush ties to financial interests in Pakistan had nothing to do with it. or his ties to the Saudis. Im sure they have nothing but the best interest of the country at heart... (that is sarcasm)

You're a little off there, it should be:

Attack the wrong enemy, the one actually opposing al Qaeda and get crtitcized.

Don't attack the real enemy (al Qaeda) and get criticized.

Makes sense to me .

Had Korea had oil, they wouldn't HAVE "nuka lee are" weapons right now because Bushka would have been all over them.

And how is he supposed to stop them? By starting a war everyone would be against and critisize him for?

N. Korea has nuclear weapons thanks to Clinton's dumb "Agreed Framework" treaty back in the '90s. This was the treaty in which the U.S. gave N. Korea nuclear material for "energy" purposes which of course the N. Koreans used to build nuclear weapons instead. The U.S. also had built (at our cost) two nuclear plants costing 1 billion dollars.
Don't blame it on Bush.

From CNN: The 1994 "agreed framework" with the United States, Japan and South Korea froze the production and use of North Korea's nuclear facilities, at least one of which was suspected of having the capability of producing weapons-grade plutonium.

In exchange, North Korea received regular shipments of heavy fuel oil and was promised newer and safer nuclear reactors from the three countries.

Nice of you to conveniently ignore the involvement of S Korea and Japan along with the fact N Korea began violating some of the doncessions they'd made during Bush's watch.

The treaty orginated with the U.S. and was executed by Pres. Clinton.
