These are troubling times. I wonder if it has ever been this bad since the Great Depression? And the worst has yet to hit. Obama is doing the right thing & putting the economy front & center. Another cut will be bringing the troops home, NOW!

I know alaska is tops in natural resources, be it oil, or gold mining. alaska also has a very low population, and probably has a lower number of people requiring public assistance. it's great when a governor can claim they have no $$$ problems and have a surplus rather than a deficit. I think many factors come into play when government has a shortfall. finding what the largest drain on a state budget and plugging the leak has to be easier than trying to manage the budget of the entire US. so, I don't think that states with no $$$ problems was solved by oil revenues. they must have governors who know how to balance a budget.
I think theJazMan almost hit the nail right on the head. Just one thing and the theory makes even more sense -- instead of thinking oil think energy.

Of course, you are also right -- also factor in that the governors have done a good job. That is also a critical factor.

That #3, #4, #5, #6, #8 all pump oil and still manage to overspend? That the many voters thought a female gov who was one of only 6 able to run a balance budget was under qualifiied as compared to a man who now plans to spend us over $1 trillion dollars per year in debt?

I'm surprised Texas isn't on the list considering how many illegals we have poaching off the health/welfare systems and filling up our jails.

Guess we're doing something right...and all this without a state income tax.

The fact is YES, they were able to overspend, not hard to do.

If I remember correctly, the only time McCain was ahead of the polls was after he announced Palin...Didn't go down in the polls until the stock market dropped several hundred points...

Getting back on track:
A couple days ago MD announced a $1.9 billion shortfall next fiscal year. This comes after a special legislative session called to balance the budget following the election of Martin O'Malley (D) which cut spending by $500 million, increased various taxes and initiated $1.5 billion in new spending.

Didn't make sense to me then either.
