Warning to Marines: Stay Out of Mexico! - NBCSANDIEGO.COM- msnbc.com (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28662592/ - broken link)

San Diego and southern California troops are being warned to stay out of Mexico.

A new U.S. Marine Corps policy is in effect restricting travel south of the border without prior approval. Officials with the U.S. Marine Corps said with the escalating violence in Mexico it's just too dangerous for Marines.
I'm at a loss for words......

What are you smoking when you read the article? Or did you even READ the article... they didn't talk about anything but the dangers of the drug cartel and the problems posing for the US marines... what prejudice? You got to be kidding me...

As a former resident of the McAllen, Texas resident area I think that article is a bit much. Too dangerous for a Marine? I highly doubt it. Now as for it getting absolutely out of hand necessitating the U.S. military to intervene? That's a distinct possibility.

What are you talking about? The article talked about San Diego and southern California.. not Texas.. and they talked about going after the drug cartels that run back into Mexico and for marines not to chase them into Mexico because its more dangerous in Mexico where the large force of the drug cartel is waiting... did you read the article?

Actually no - that is not what the article is saying at all. The Marines do not engage the drug cartels on either side of the border. And if they were to go into Mexico as an active military unit that would be an issue - it is called invasion of a sovereign nation.

This stuff happens all the time and is routine. When I was in the Navy back 15-20 years ago in SoCal they periodically banned marines and navy back then from going into Mexico while off duty. It was because they tended to get drunk and stupid down there and often ended up getting in fights or in jail. One guy brought a gun down there and was in the Mexico clinker for months.

The drug violence is greater now, but marines and navy guys have not changed much.

My Navy experience in San Diego-TJ as well. Many years ago, there was a brief period when US Navy personnel were allowed to go on Liberty in Hong Kong, but were required to wear CIVILIAN CLOTHING on shore....not because HK (then a British Crown Colony) was a particularly "bad" place, or "too tough for sailors"..but because there was a brief spate of violence by the "Red Guards" (fanatical communist youth gangs from mainland China, operating illegally in HK) who would attack and beat uniformed Western military types...but they had no 'beef' with civilians.

The Navy simply took a 'practical' step here, not one of 'fear' or 'intimidation'.

These sort of issues shouldn't really surprise anyone....since ANY military force is still BASICALLY a "Huge group of teenagers and 20-somethings, a LONG way from home". Military people will probably ALWAYS run into a certain amount of 'tension' with the locals, anywhere they go. Most are fine young men, but a few 'bad apples' can cause a HUGE negative impression of the whole group....and cause 'preventive measures' to be taken.

A similar ban has been effect for soldiers stationed at Ft. Bliss in El Paso for months. I took it to be simply for their protection. As noted above, our young people do not always show the best judgement when 'partying.' With all of the other horrors going on now, the last thing we need is for one of the cartels to get their hands on our service people.
