Only time I ever heard of an openly gay man getting beaten up in the Navy for being gay was when he made the mistake of "coming on too strong" to someone he thought was gay but wasn't. I'm being polite in using the term "coming on too strong". Let's just say hands and lips went way too far and let it go at that.
There's a great number of rapes on military bases by military members against women.
Does that mean that these straight men (?) should be discharged from the military, yes.
It's the women who bear the brunt of it; if there is a conviction or a trial.
But, I believe Dave thinks this is okay, after all boys will be boys and all's fair in rape and war.
Where did I ever say that?! If you were referring to the part of my post where I mentioned the girl claiming to have had sex with a guy on the ship, that was not rape. She claimed they had consentual sex on the ship together. Never once did I mention rape. I was a victim of sexual assault while in the Navy. A guy I thought was my friend tried to force his way on me when he thought I was too drunk to fight back. I got him kicked out the Navy. I would never say rape is okay. You need to back off.

Wow. It's sad that things like that happen, but even if the gay guy made the wrong move, his attacker was wrong to retaliate in that way. If a woman was coming on too strong to him and he was uninterested, would he beat her up for it? Highly unlikely.
When hetero soldiers are at risk of losing their jobs for mentioning their wives and girlfriends, then I'll agree with you. Until then, Don't Ask Don't Tell is discriminatory and needs to be abolished.
If the hetero male soldiers are so tough, surely they can handle another soldier saying that he or she is gay.
Hm, if we mentioned our wife AND girlfriend...yeah, we might get in trouble
I believe rape can usually be proven. There's evidence like DNA, tearing, etc.
Of course, if you're gay, I guess what you have to say won't be listened to.

DNA and tearing can be there even after consensual sex. Rape is actually one of the harder crimes to convict, for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that something that starts consensual can end up "rape".
Well, I don't know when that was, but I doubt it would be tolerated these days. I'm sure it especially won't be tolerated when DADT is repealed.
It was 6 months ago. The culture is different in the military. Each branch has its own kind of personality, but each branch looks out for its own, often whether or not its fair to do so. Im learning that as I go.
