The real question is, why do the "conservatives" love the government when they are in power ( just look at the last eight years) and suddenly treat it like the enemy when they're not in power?

Hmmmm.

Answer: Build roads and infrastructure (including using money from the stimulus bill that just passed).

You mean you don't know this? Virtually all roads and infrastructure and built by private contractors using government money.

Conservatives must have an irony-detection deficiency. Did you see the OP? bornandraised atl asked a good question.

There are plenty of things that individuals can do better. There are a few major and obvious ones that they cannot. So we set up our government to do those things. National defense. Interstate highways and commerce. Product safety. Foreign policy and trade. Justice. Etc.

The things that individuals do better are left to them.

I don't consider myself a liberal, but I get called that a lot on CD. I figure that entitles me to answer your very wise question.

I think the individual citizen (and groups of them) are in a much better position to take care of the land than the government is. I'm a city boy by birth, but I love nature. I've been blessed the past few years to live in rural settings. It appalls me to see the rivers forests and streams used for waste disposal. You can't go anywhere without the ubiquitous beer bottles, etc. Surely we can do better. God help us if we can't.

I think the same can be said of the littering and illegal dumping that goes on in the cities.
