You are right in that most diseases are multifactorial. No doubt. Diabetes is a prime example. If you are in the field, you know that the cost of a patient with diabetes is nothing compared to a patient with poorly controlled diabetes that gets a stroke, a heart attach, loss of vision, renal failure, etc. My point is not that we can cure everything by getting healthier, but that by getting healthier, and by taking better care of our health, we can save the bulk of health care cost.

I'd rather not say what field I'm in since I don't care for political backlash in my home town. But if you are in the field, you know there is a direct relationship between type2dm, htn, etc to obesity.

If health care was a luxury why does the Gov. make sure poor people have it, people thought the same thing about Social Security, Why does the gov, care about your retirement, if you don't save why do they care, With as many Insurance companies hiring or looking for Agents in this economy some body knows some thing.

Health care should neither be a luxury or a right. It is a responsibility of the individual.

Long past due. The rest of the civilized world has had such a system for decades.

Actually it would appear that the USA is moving to become entirely socialist. Big brother knows best right? Just ask Barney Frank, Dodd and now John Kerry.

but people are stupid they should also save for their retirement right? I mean how much does it cost to watch TV in a warm place, right, But no one saves so the Gov make us do it, our health care system is burdened by the fact people don't go to the Dr. until they are sick and dying and don't care who gets the bill.

I think I understand and agree. We need to change the way people feel about their health.

Are they just going to pay the bills or are they taking over all of the hospitals, Doctors and Nurses?

Bogus know-nothingism.

The present "free market" doesn't offer you insurance if you have a "pre-existing condition".

The present "free market" barely has a product to offer an individual if your employer doesn't offer health insurance coverage.

The present "free market" doesn't offer a range of products for the range of income levels in our society.

The present "free market" doesn't produce cost savings nor increased productivity of delivering health care services in the aggregate due to a dysfunctional marketplace, see above.

How is the individual supposed to navigate this "free market" chaos?

Is it in the nation's best interests that massive numbers (tens of millions) of Americans aren't receiving healthcare services? Less preventive care means MORE SPENDING on health care later in the person's life.

The present "free market" healthcare system is FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN and will eventually be fixed.

Don't get me wrong. There's plenty wrong with the system. We're working on it. I just think that it is fundamentally wrong to just throw money at the problem. We as a country needs an attitude adjustment when it comes to health care. It's not unlike the economic crisis. If you read most of the threads, people blame everyone but themselves. Same with health care. We created the problem by not caring about our health, by not stressing exercise and education, by becoming the most inactive and obese society on earth. We make our selves sick. Then we blame others for not fixing us. Of course there are more to the problem than this, but we will never get anywhere unless we changes these facts.
