The international alliences and entanglements are the reason that lead to WWI in the first place. And we joined because our financial industry was too involved in financing England and when England wasn't winning the war, we figured the financial institutions were "too big to fail", because if thay failed, the US economy would have failed. hmmmm 'too big to fail'... that has a familiar ring to it.
Finn, I guess the sinking of ships by submarines had nothing to do with why we entered WW I. American citizens were aboard some of those passenger ships and got killed for being on them. I guess to you those incdents were only excuses, though.
That's easy: 1) German unrestricted submarine warfare and 2) The Zimmermann Telegram
Finn considers those to be nothing but excuses that were used to fool the people into thinking something was going on.
Of course, we all know that part of the reason was help for Great Britain but that is an excuse, also. Finn will be glad to tell you that it was money and nothing else.
Even if the message that Maher wants to get across might be true, the way he insults the troops and what he said is not a joke and not funny at all!
I haven't watch the video (work for a company that blocks those things) if he indeed insult the Troops who were sent to those countries by the administration, then i'm glad i didn't watch it. To disrespect our armed forces for server our country is wrong and ignorant. However if he merely just questioning why we are there, then the question is valid, but only if its respectful to the armed forces.
...I have deemed it my duty, therefore, to say to the Imperial German Government, that if it is still its purpose to prosecute relentless and indiscriminate warfare against vessels of commerce by the use of submarines, notwithstanding the now demonstrated impossibility of conducting that warfare in accordance with what the Government of the United States must consider the sacred and indisputable rules of international law and the universally recognized dictates of humanity, the Government of the United States is at last forced to the conclusion that there is but one course it can pursue; and that unless the Imperial German Government should now immediately declare and effect an abandonment of its present methods of warfare against passenger and freight carrying vessels this Government can have no choice but to sever diplomatic relations with the Government of the German Empire altogether.
This decision I have arrived at with the keenest regret; the possibility of the action contemplated I am sure all thoughtful Americans will look forward to with unaffected reluctance. But we cannot forget that we are in some sort and by the force of circumstances the responsible spokesmen of the rights of humanity, and that we cannot remain silent while those rights seem in process of being swept utterly away in the maelstrom of this terrible war. We owe it to a due regard to our own rights as a nation, to our sense of duty as a representative of the rights of neutrals the world over, and to a just conception of the rights of mankind to take this stand now with the utmost solemnity and firmness....

I am not saying they were meaningless incidents and had nothing to do with it. Citizens were warned about the danders of going on those ships, so if they went anyway it was at their own risk. Those reasons weighed in the scales of course, but the banking situation was also a big reason, if not the biggest.

Getting back to the original topic of the thread, I think you should watch the video. The man I can only stand in doses of maybe 15 minutes at a time, Bill Maher, did say that the people in those other countries are going to have to learn to rape themselves someday. In other words our troops are nothing but rapists and they do that to the people they are there to protect. If that isn't about as bad as he could say about them, what is?
Some of what Maher says is humorous but this little bit is what always makes me change channels just to get away from him. If he were as funny as he seems to think he is he would be able to work somewhere else other than HBO.
WOW!!! Bill Maher said something tasteless and insensitive!? YOU'RE KIDDING!!!
Bill Maher = Ann Coulter = Rush Limbaugh = Michael Moore. Meanwhile the rest of us suffer from their influence over the fringes of both political parties.
