I'm all for reforming welfare, but I believe the currently proposed legislation is as backwards as it gets. Who cares about the lottery. I'd rather see the government put their resources towards catching those that abuse the system by making a good living doing under-the-table work and those that buy drugs and still live off of taxpayer dollars.
Powerball, Keno, or the casinos -- is there any difference? Should people be forced to show a paycheck stub or their checking account balance before being admitted into a casino or being sold a lottery ticket?
It is unenforceable.
obama is posturing and acting like he has a right to tell companies how to spend money because they took bailout funds.
What's the difference? If you take state aid, does the state not have a right to limit the money you get in a state-run lottery?
Call it a voluntary tax but it does not abuse anyone. It's still a choice to purchase a ticket or not. True poorer people tend to buy more tickets because they see no way out but what's wrong with that?
Isn't that the same argument about people buying homes they couldn't afford. The lottery is a scam taking advantage of the people who can least afford it.
I think the state should be able to recoup funds should a welfare recipient or child support dodger win the lottery.
I once heard someone call the lottery, "a tax on the stupid." The money from the state lottery is used to make improvements in the state of AZ. I see no reason to get rid of the lottery. If poor or greedy adults chose to play the lottery, that's their business.

You are right, but I doo feel sorry for people who can't afford it wasting their money on an illusion.

it wouldn't matter. poor people are idiots, and will end up bankrupt no matter how much they get. I don't think they should limit it. it's funny to read stories about poor people spending all the money in a year and being poor again.
