Quote" President Barack Obama signaled Thursday he will not seek renewal of a U.S. assault weapons ban but instead will step up enforcement of laws banning the transfer of such guns across the border.

Obama had pledged during his campaign to seek renewal of the ban but has bowed to the reality that such a move would be unpopular in politically key U.S. states and among Republicans as well as some conservative Democrats."

Obama pledges help to slow US arms flow (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090417/ap_on_go_pr_wh/lt_obama_mexico - broken link)

Activism, mass consumerism, challenging propaganda has paid off for now.Thankyou to all who post to counteract propaganda, who inform those that don't know much about this issue. And thanks to all who made politicians think twice about non effective measures against crime and instead try to actually fight crime without punishing everyday Americans. Thanks for making them fear not getting re-elected...but stay on guard.

He will stick with his pledge if he has a chance but right now it would be political suicide to try and reinstate the gun ban.

I'd like to see a push from him, Pulosi & the crew. Talk about a revolt, I don't believe most states or the American people would tolerate it.

True.Obviously the main reason they have backed down is self interest of retaining Wash DC.Continue to counteract the propaganda, inform the uninformed and keep sending a message we want real efforts that will stop violence not feel good efforts that limit citizens rights but do little to really stop violence. We gun enthusiasts don't like seeing people and police hurt either.

The next step is to rethink our drug policy, the main reason for much of the violence.

The opponents of any assualt weapons ban live in a world of fear. They are not needed to protect your home and family. (This from a multiple gun owner.)

As a kid of the 60's I thought by now we would have learned that our 50 year "War on Drugs" is a 90% flop. It's just like the prohibition of the early 1900's and does nothing but enable criminals and make them wealthy.

Once the Government starts banning one weapon it will be easy to add the rest just look at England and Austrialia. Now England wants to ban sharp pointed knives due to crime.

We already ban tons of weapons. Doesn't keep hunters from hunting and doesn't keep you from protecting your family and home.

So we need to ban more guns, because the "tons" we have already banned aren't enough? ok, LOL

Ignorance is a dangerous thing.
