Well, if you take into account the fact that liberals almost always get the definition wrong, it would seem that conservatives are the only ones left who might succeed in defining conservative accurately.

Doesn't mean liberals can't. Just that they don't. "Can't" is an assumption, even if an obvious one in this case.

BTW, I'm a "conservative" kind of Republican. Apparently the OP left out that category... among others.

But isn't that the point of the OP, that there really ain't no "one size fits all" definition among conservatives, or the GOP? And from the looks of their current disarray and squabbling (social vs libertarian vs economic conservatives, etc.), it appears that even the conservatives would agree with that. Although, one should probably never underestimate their ability to overlook the obvious.

Eh, I'm a former Republican. I enjoyed a brief flirtation with the party during college & shortly thereafter. Hey, some people did drugs - this was my rebellion.

I think if a strong center emerges, I could see myself going with the GOP in another 15 years. To me, it's cyclical - a time to expand govt and a time to prune back.

There you go, making the usual error of mistaking Republicans for conservatives.

There are many different kinds of Republicans, which is why the party is moving steadily to the left and abandoning conservatism. But there is only one kind of conservative... a philosophy which is being subsumed by the increasing number of liberals and confused half-liberals in the Republican party.

Ah, so there is really only one "true" philosophy, and all others are false "gods"? Actually, that sounds kinda familar (i.e. "Fundamentalist" Christians, Islamists, Zionists, etc.)...

If you were a "long-time Democrat" who left because of McGovern 37 years ago, you must be a WWII vet.

Strange that McGovern would upset you much. He was never even close to winning.

What caused you to change parties?
G. W. Bush and the damage he's caused. I voted for him 2000. By 2003, when it became clear that the Iraq invasion was a trumped up sack of lies, I'd had enough. Couple that with his neglect and mismanagement in all areas of his administration and his party's solid backing of all that incompetence, and I think I have good reasons for my resentment.

What damage has McGovern caused America?

Bush's damage is clear to all with eyes to see.
