The first and most important responsibility of a government is the safety and protection of its citizens. Without that, every other freedom or right is meaningless. Freedom without security is nothing at all. Just look at the 1930s and early 1940s to see what it means to be weak in the face of a grave threat.

Since WWII, the US has been the protector of the world's freedom and has been the only power willing and capable to stand up the threats in the world. Are you saying we should emulate the militarily useless and weak countries of western Europe? The reason they don't spend any money on military is because, with the slight exception of the UK, they have relied and continue to rely on us for their defense.

While am not an advocate, per se, of the OP's premiss, I sure as hell would be interested in knowing how 13 Carrier Battle Groups, 21 Combat Brigades and more bombers than you can shake a stick that would have defeated 9 guys with box cutters?

Well, that's the problem. The land of fruits and nuts, don't have a clue. Abort as many pregnancies as you want, but it is cruel and inhumane to execute cold blooded killers/rapists/baby molesters/etc....

No wonder that state is up a s**t creek w/o a paddle, and broke.

But thanks for the update, I didn't know that.

looking at the numbers, and i am very anti war, most of your expense is not coming from the war.
that is the scary part, its coming from bailouts. in my own state medical program is out of control. the deficit and the medical expense are about equal.

The USA could be spending 75% of the the World's military budget, and our deficit could be double what it is today.

It just wouldn't matter.

These ignorant right wingers would still have no concept of the amount, the toll it takes on our Federal budget, and they would still argue that cutting the military "kills troops" and "emboldens our enemies".

They don't think for themselves! The are sheep....the concept of spending too much on the military doesn't cross their minds.....that would be unpatriotic to God's favorite Country!

And by the same token, those rabid, drugged-out, cretin left-wingers would believe that hugs, especially for trees, tofu, happy smoke and tie-dye will keep them safe in an increasingly dangerous world. The concept of taking from the workers to give to the idlers and illegals doesn't phase them; until it hits them square in the pocketbook and then the liberal sheep are convinced it must be the fault of those nasty fiscal conservatives who believe that you should reap the benefit of your labors. Go figure!

A Balanced Budget Amendment would go a long way to solving our military overspending and our entitlement overspending either by forcing Congress to cut spending, raise taxes, or a combination of both. However, the fastest rising budget item is paying interest on the loans we have out. Let's think about cutting that before it becomes the largest as well.

Instead of cutting your so called "military spending," all Obama had to do was not to continue the bailouts Bush started, and to reduce the size of government by one third. There are a whole bunch of departments that can be cut by a substantial margin.

When you cut military spending, you are slowing or destroying (whichever may be the case) all the industries involved in the creating of armaments, etc. But a level of bureaucracy can be cut at the DOD. Reducing the number of soldiers create another problem: unemployment. Also, somebody has to take care of the military dependents. Military families invest a lot of their money locally, and this helps the local economies.

Raise taxes? The average working American is already paying over 42% in local and Federal taxes. But that's not all, since a lot more taxes are soon to come to pay for the bailouts. On top of that, the US has perhaps the second highest corporate tax in the world.

Truest statement in this thread.

Cut the military all you want, but the politicians will find another place for the money.
