Federal Web sites hit hard by cyber attacks - Security- msnbc.com

Quote:
WASHINGTON - A widespread and unusually resilient computer attack that began July 4 knocked out the Web sites of several government agencies, including some that are responsible for fighting cyber crime, The Associated Press has learned.

The Treasury Department, Secret Service, Federal Trade Commission and Transportation Department Web sites were all down at varying points over the holiday weekend and into this week, according to officials inside and outside the government. Some of the sites were still experiencing problems Tuesday evening.

Federal government officials refused to publicly discuss any details of the cyber attack, and would only generally acknowledge that it occurred. It was not clear whether other government sites also were attacked.

According to the article they suspect NK, having said that this type of attack is not exactly rocket science and more akin to using a sledge hammer. The perpetrators will gain access to many computers, maybe even your computer. Then they send a lot of requests to the server overwhelming it.

There's lengthy article here if you want to learn more:

If you want to point fingers point them at people with lax or no security on their home computers. A DDOS attack cannot be prevented by the server that is the target.
