After doing a little research, I found that the UK and US basically have the same definitions for violent crime.

After reading the lurid headline in the Telegraph look furthur along the article and you'll find " Researchers admit that comparisons of crime data between countries must be viewed with caution because of differing criminal justice systems, and how crimes are reported & measured"

In other words they admit that the survey is probably inaccurate.

I guess a LOT of British people do not like the idea of their nation having more violent crime than the USA.

Violance is a cancer that has spread throughout the big cities in the UK.
London has extremely nasty and violant areas. The killings in trhe UK are different to the USA. In the UK, Knife crime is the biggy. In America gun crime is the biigy. In the UK, violance and killing is up close and personal. In the States, violance and killing is mainly from a fair distance and with the pulling of a trigger.
It's "dog eat dog" in the UK but it is fast becoming "dog eat dog" in America too.

There is a big difference btwn. the U.S. and U.K. on crime though...here we can defend ourselves.

Considering how much governments enjoy fiddling with figures the real crime rate is no doubt an awful lot higher.

Drinking yourself stupid and fighting is pretty much the national sport for alot of Brits. My local town centre now has a temporary hospital set up on the weekends. I'll bet that makes up most of the violent crime figures.

Actually, the statistics do not surprise me. I grew up in the UK and in one of the cities that has the worst reputation for violence, Glasgow. So, I have some level of understanding.

First of all, the UK has always been a violent country. You don't win an empire by being pacifists and, I would point out, the last war where Britain was on the losing side was the American revolution. Secondly, Britain is an overwhelmingly urban country and urban areas tend to be more violent than rural ones. Add into that mix the issue of urban deprivation made worse by poorly planned slum clearance, shunting people into "estates" (projects) with few facilities, economic deprivation and a culture of binge drinking and male bravado. So, you have a recipe for a violent society.

All that said, I go back to the UK about twice a year and I have rarely encountered violence on the streets, have never been attacked there, or mugged or robbed. So, lets not exaggerate the reality of this violence for ordinary people.

Probably best that you don't visit the UK then.

The whole of England and Wales recorded 619 murders during the previous year, according to the Home Office. This little infographic breaks down the numbers.

That implies a murder rate of 1.14 per 100,000, compared to 5.01 in the US. So, at least by that metric, England and Wales are about 4.4 times more serene than the US.
