Interesting....

Quote:
Britain's violent crime record is worse than any other country in the European union, it has been revealed.
Official crime figures show the UK also has a worse rate for all types of violence than the U.S. and even South Africa (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/south_africa - broken link) - widely considered one of the world's most dangerous countries.
Quote:
The figures, compiled from reports released by the European Commission and United Nations, also show:

  • The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.
  • It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbours, including France (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/france - broken link), Germany (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/germany - broken link), Italy (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/italy - broken link) and Spain (http://explore.dailymail.co.uk/locations/countries/spain - broken link).
  • The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.
  • It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offences than recorded in Germany and France.

Too bad they didn't cite any U.S. numbers for comparison. They only said that the UK is "worse than the U.S."

A few more numbers are given below the chart:

Quote:
The U.S. has a violence rate of 466 crimes per 100,000 residents, Canada 935, Australia 92 and South Africa 1,609.

Pssst! Wanna buy the Brooklyn Bridge?

Classic example of apples-to-oranges comparison.

From the Daily Mail tabloid nonetheless. Real creditable!

The Daily Mail is a tabloid. But from reading the Telegraph and Times I get the impression that the UK DOES have a crime problem.

UK more violent than South Africa?

UK
Population: approx. 60 million
# of Homicides: >800 murders

South Africa
Population: approx. 48 million
# of Homicides: <20,000 murders

I think in the UK they have different definitions of "violent" crime, and have much more responsive police that document and report everything.

One gets the opinion that the South African police are overwhelmed, underpaid and more concerned with more pressing issues than filling out reports of purse snatching and the like...
