California is light years ahead of the rest of the Nation when it comes to this topic... Good to see, maybe the rest of the Nation will catch on...

Really? Wow, and I thought it was just the current Democratic majority that was trying to force more government regulation and intrusion into our lives. But seriously, both sides do push their own agendas and both sides have instituted policies that have infringed upon my personal freedom and privacy. Marijuana is just another pet issue that should have been resolved decades ago. The government doesn't care about marijuana. What they care about are taxes and campaign contributors. Lobbyists wanted marijuana made illegal because of the superior products that could be made with hemp. Logging and paper companies stood to loose the market in favor of more affordable hemp paper products. Not to mention hemp rope is some of the strongest you can buy and hemp clothing is notoriously tough.

Then you have the tax issue. The government wants control, hence the term "controlled substance" You are free to take all the prescription meds you want, as long as you go through the system. That's what they want to do with marijuana. Make it so they are the dealers and they make the profits and don't miss out on those taxes the regular dealers aren't paying. I think in the near future we may see legalized marijuana, but it won't be as it should be. People will probably still not be able to grow it at home, and it will still be a crime to sell it without a government license and provider. It will be another falsetto freedom for us, another cash cow for the government. Atleast, that's how I think it will go.

I would guess that you're right. In California, the system is already almost set up as you described. "Medical marijuana" is legal, as long as it's purchased from a government-approved dispensary. If and when marijuana is legalized in this state, it'll be easy to just say, "Okay, the medical marijuana dispensaries are now just marijuana dispensaries", but the licensing requirements will remain, I'm sure.

But hey - at least it's not entirely illegal anymore.

I don't think it will generate the billions it claims. People are currently used to buying it from non-govt dealers. Whatever the government will sell it for with tax, the illegal dealers who already have an infrastructure, will sell at a discount.

Right................................. So "more freedom" means

1, bigger government
2. more regulations
3. increased gun control
4. increased taxes
5government health care
6. government auto industry
7. government banking
8. suppression of free speech through the "fairness doctrine"
9. support of eminent domain for the confiscation of private property

Liberal "tolerance" means it is okay to think and do whatever you want, as long as it supports liberal theology. If not, it is racist or stupid. Stalin would be so happy, as that kind of "freedom" promoted by modern liberalism can only be had in Cuba or North Korea- both dream worlds.

As someone else said, neither party is for freedom; Republicans tend to want to restrict personal behavioral freedoms, and Democrats restrict economic freedoms.

In every poll I've seen about sex or drugs, Republicans favor restrictions more than Democrats. In every poll I've seen about taxation and business regulation, Democrats favor restrictions more than Republicans.

The basic tenet of socialism is ceding personal and fiancial freedom to the government and trust that the government can make better decisions for the people than the people themselves. The nazis were socialists. If one cedes personal freedom to the government, and they exercise that power, how is that not facism? I personally am for freedom and oppose the government taking my money or telling me what to do. Why is it that the liberals seem to promote "freedoms" that damage society or a civilization? More sex and drugs- that will really help the country.

If the Republican Party is the party of freedom and less government regulation, why are most Republicans against the legalization of marijuana?
This Republican isn't. But what difference does it make the Dems have a bullet proof majority. Do it already. If they don't it doesn't really matter what percentage of what party supports it they are all the same.

I've tried to ask many conservatives this question and they have NOTHING for an answer. One of the many reasons I consider myself a conservative but am left the Republican party until they can get their act together...
