Ronald Reagan made his bones as head of a union.

Hardly anyone is anti-union per se. Many of us feel that as powerful organizations, they should not be above scrutiny and criticism if warranted.

Then again maybe Jimmy Hoffa was simply misunderstood.

well, Im a "leftie" and I started this thread. I admire the hell out of this union, standing up for their guy, and Im jealous on behalf of every worker who isnt part of a union, who's just out there on his own and unprotected. Of course there's political grandstanding involved in this one, but shop stewards do what theyre doing for Sgt C on a smaller scale every day, and keep people in their jobs, often by showing the management representative the worker's (and the workers') side of the situation, thus leading to better understanding between the two groups.

Though this is way out of the ordinary, they're doing what a union does -- protect its members.

Are you and your job protected by a union?
This only went this far because the President said those words on national prime time TV.

They would not have to do this otherwise.

The UAW have given unions the bad name they have now.

We don't have a union where I work...a 30 year employee, a super nice guy and hard worker, was escorted out of the building and fired. I'm sure there was a good reason, because the company I work for is a pretty decent company. But I wonder what would have happened if he had union support.

Good points.

And I guess I'm a rightie. Whatever. But I have never really been pro or anti union. Just thought Meson should know that if he's pointing out one side for being hypocritical (or at least picking and choosing when and when not to support something) then he'd better look at his side as well.

It is great to know someone has your back, but human beings are flawed and can fall into pack-mentality real easy. Sometimes your actions are more rational and compromising when you know you are on your own.

Kudos for admitting it....my point is that most groups, whether unions, countries, lobbyists, corporations, Wall Street brokers, oil companies, religions, universities, farmers,...all of these entities may have problems, have bad members....it doesn't make them all bad.

Most anti-union people never consider that.

I completely agree, and yes Unions get un-fair bad reps sometimes....so do corporations. People who see in black and white may be a bigger problem than that which they are complaining about.

I never pat the unions on the back, no matter who is in the white house.

But, although they (the police unions) don't want to hear it, their is still profiling in America, and extreme racism in some police departments. The union is just circling their wagons, until the next police beating, or other incident comes up, where they wont have a easy target (Obama in this case) to show their outrage towards (since they can't point at themselves, now can they?).

There is. But this wasnt profiling. They were just responding to a call of a suspected break in.

If there werent any calls made and the police stopped him for no reason that would def be profiling. Or just saw him and stopped to question him that would be as well. I just dont see it in this case.
