It is refreshing to see a union with some backbone stand up against a bully corporation and say HELL NO to huge cuts in their benefits! The company tried to bully the union by issuing threats to "move to Louisiana" and "move to Mexico" if the workers refused to take a 10% cut in pay, 3 days less in vacation and huge cuts in the medical and dental benefits. And the workers told them rightfully to go straight to hell. Sometimes you just got to put all the chips on the table and let the dice fall where they will.
You do realize that sales are down.... doesn't mean PROFIT... it means severe cuts that has ALREADY taken place to increase those profits... the unions reluctance to agree to further cuts and with lagging sales, well, you'll find a company in big trouble in the future... I understand people want to look at short term effects but why they choose to ignore long term consequences is bewildering... however the deal offered by the company is bad, that's the point of renegotiating...

The layoffs were going to happen anyway. The company had already said that it was going to lay off 800 union people and move the work to Mexico REGARDLESS of whether the union voted up or down. We agreed to cuts in pay and benefits cause it was the right thing to do. We don't even turn on the lights until noon. The company saved a half million on our power bill in 2009. Con Ed even came to see what we were doing and they were impressed but not happy. Employees are encouraged to make suggestions on ways to save money. We all saved jobs and the company is getting stronger.

That company has been there doing what it does for many decades. Good times and bad times they have always been there. The only difference is that for many decades the company was public and it was ran by the family who founded it (Walter and Ann Beech). It was locally owned and ran until it was sold by greedy heirs to an outfit called Raytheon. That is when all the trouble started.

I could save my company lots of money but they don't listen to us. They have an attitude of "you are paid to work and the boss is paid to think". So I just leave them alone and do my work.
