The Healthy Americans Act, also referred to as the "Wyden - Bennett plan"

Plan highlights
CBO review scores it as deficit neutral; insures everyone, pays for itself.
It's bi-partisan and is garnering second and even third looks as the other bills prove too expensive, unworkable or just plain bad.
So who doesn't like it? Unions. Which means it must be a good bill!

And it does not lay the ground work for a complete govenment take over of health care.

And, just how would that plan work for the unemployed? Or, the underemployed who work, but are on some sort of public assistance to make ends meet? (WIC, food stamps etc) If they can't pay their bills now, where will their premium monies come from?

Competition is the mantra of the Republican's, and if that meant real, true competition, it would be hard to argue with them. But, in reality, it never seems to mean just that. For instance, here in Texas, our friends in the GOP gave us deregulated energy back when GW was the Governor. The competition would lower everyone's electric bill! In fact, though, what happened was that no matter which energy company we chose, our rates went up because we're a captive market. Right now, we pay on average 48% more for our electricity than do our neighbors in Oklahoma, who do not have the "benefits" of competition.

I'd have to see the text of the plan we're talking about here, but on its face, it seems it could more properly be named, "The Insurance Company Benefit Bill."
