I liked Matthews too, about a decade or so ago. I cannot stand to listen to him today.
In addition to this, when they showed a young lady who was telling her representative how upset she was that stuff coming out of Congress and the Senate was so far from the Constitution, Matthews made an offhanded comment about her being a racist.
Completely uncalled for, her comments clearly were aimed at expansive government.
Yeah, I'm curious. Because he supports Ron Paul and doesn't want to bomb every Middle Eastern country and make shady pipeline deals with Karzai et al.?
Kind of extreme to me. Wearing a gun is unnecessarily provocative. As conservative as I am I believe in some social safety net. We need taxes, not as high as they are but we need them to support the military, pave roads etc.

None of the things you list are considered a safety net.

I know there weren't meant to. Social safety net like medicare, medicaid and social security. Of course the way they work today is inefficient but we need something to take care of the elderly and those who simply can't take care of themselves.

Old people weren't able to take care of themselves before the 1930's or 1960's?
