We have actually been discussing the crap-content of the OP. The stupid claims about income tax have been blown away. The stupid claims about sales tax have also been blown away. In states where there is no sales tax applicable to automobile sales, there is no difference between the tax situation with a CARS rebate and without. In those dozen or so states that have an applicable sales tax but don't count the rebate as a deduction to the taxable sales price, there is no difference between the tax situation with a CARS rebate and without. In states that have an applicable sales tax and do recognize the rebate as a reduction in taxable sales price, sales taxes are REDUCED by the rebate. If state sales tax were 5%, and you bought a $20,000 car with a $4,500 rebate, you would not only save the $4,500, but also an additional $225 in reduced sales taxes. The majority of states falls into this category.

OZ was the original OP. He feels compelled to defend the crap he originally posted, though he has been proved wrong at every turn. He's not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I notice the need to break the rules by the left leaning posters...

The OP stated purchasers would in some cases be required to pay sales tax on the $4500,and THAT has been shown to be true.

I do -- I would hope that those who took this cash have to pay some taxes, otherwise all the tax that will be collected will be from those of us who didn't get this free $4,500.

The government cannot have a program without some group having to pay for it.
