It seems the use of CCTV to fight crime is a failure in the UK...

Interesting that there are over 1,000,000 cameras in London alone.

And 4,000,000 throughout the UK.

Quote:
An internal report released by the Metropolitan Police under Freedom of Information laws disclosed that more than one million of these are in London alone.
However, it cast doubt on the use of the cameras as a crime fighting tool.
It said: “For every 1,000 cameras in London, less than one crime is solved per year.”
Quote:
Britain has 1 per cent of the world’s population but around 20 per cent of its CCTV cameras - which works out as the equivalent of one for every 14 people.

I wouldn't call it a complete failure although every single camera don't pick up all petty crimes in the country. While america is still searching for Bin Laden even now, Britan has managed to capture all of their terrorists - and also prevented a terrorist attack just one day before a planned bomb was to be set-off.

How is that a failure?

At what cost?

It seems too many are more than willing to be frightened into giving up their freedoms for the illusion of safety.

After reading it, it doesn't sound like it's because of the cameras.

CCTV's do not seem to work very well to combat crime...however they DO record people's movements and activities....

Combine this with the various laws passed in the UK and it is, at least to me, quite troubling.

However a lot of people seem quite fine with it all.

Why should I be concerned if some public (police) or private (Wal-mart) organization is taping my activities? I am going to do what ever I damn well please anyway. If some of my activities are illegal then I should be caught. I am always responsible for what I do. Why should I worry about you watching?

LOL....

Why should you be concerned if the security services demand to search your person or your home...unless you have something to hide.

Because to err to be human, and we're all subject to unpreventable "accidents" at times!:hamd

The idea of cameras everywhere in the UK is enough for me to put that country off my travel list! Over there, I'd be too hesitant to even pick my noise, which I love doing, as who knows, there could be a law against it and I'd get arrested!

Here, in Las Vegas, there's a $150 fine for spitting on a downtown sidewalk. Over there? Who knows! A ticket for spitting on the sidewalk while being there as a tourist?

The article is a stupid way of looking at it. The presence of the cameras has most likely prevented many many crimes from occurring.
