Scranton Mayor Doherty discloses abortion beliefs - News - The Times-Tribune (http://www.scrantontimes.com/news/scranton_mayor_doherty_discloses_abortion_beliefs - broken link)
Quote:
As he considers a run for governor next year, Mayor Chris Doherty says he supports a woman's right to choose an abortion.
Mr. Doherty acknowledged his previously undeclared position when a Times-Tribune reporter asked, following a tip that the mayor was expressing his support for abortion rights to Democrats he met with across the state.
"I just believe it's a woman's right to choose," Mr. Doherty said. "It's a private matter what they want to do with their lives, and I don't think government or anybody else should interfere with that."

Good for him! Reading this board has certainly painted a very negative picture of Mayor Doherty, but I am happy to read that he at least supports a woman's right to choose

Where's Bishop Martino when you need him? We need to vote this clown out of office next November. I wonder if DiBileo wants to mount a write-in campaign.

I'm editing what I had originally posted, which was an argument in response to Trucker7, but then I stopped because this is not the place for it. There is a "controversial issues" board if you want to debate abortion. I am not going to be a part of the reason this thread gets derailed!

He's another hypocrite like the rest of them, calling yourself Catholic then in favor of killing innocent babies. I don't respect the man anymore now than I ever did.

You are right! All women have a right to choose. It should not be a religious issue. I tried to rep you but I was told to spread it around, lol.

Write-in campaign for DiBileo?!! UGH! Why not launch a formidable write-in campaign using someone who will take the city in a bold new direction? I actually like the Rolo Tomassi character who goes toe-to-toe with me sometimes on the message board of the Scranton Times-Tribune (with ME, not my impostor).

I'll never understand this line of thinking. Our politicians are NOT supposed to vote on THEIR beliefs. Their jobs are to make sure this country adheres to it's Constitution. And the Constitution guarantees us freedom. We also have separation of Church and State in this country which means religious views should not be the basis of anything the government does.

Doherty supports women's rights. He's not a woman so I don't think he's getting an abortion anytime soon. So I fail to see how he is a hypocrite. If anything, I'd call him a hypocrite if, as a politician, he used his religious beliefs to dictate what the rest of us do. That flies *directly* in the face of everything this country is based and built on.

Didn't you say once that you wanted to run for office in Scranton someday? The job comes with a nice salary and plenty of perks.

Indeed. You could be an atheist and still find abortion repugnant. I wonder why so many Democrats (and a few Republicans) seem to be OK with killing innocent babies, but not guilty criminals.
