Michelle Obama is a private citizen who happens to be married to a politician. She should be off limits in regards to petty bickering. That is the only decent thing to do.
I don't know the answers to your first and third question, but about the second one, is she trying to influence policy, I wouldn't be so sure that the answer is "no".

I'd have to disagree with #2 and say the answer is more likely a "yes". That's not wrong or a bad thing, it's just that most (if not every) modern First Lady has done something to try and influence policy or push a certain agenda (off the top of my head: Hillary Clinton and healthcare, Laura Bush and reading/education). Even if it isn't a particular "policy", it's common for first ladies to use their publicity to draw attention to issues that are important to them.

As far as petty bickering? It's a waste of time, effort, and distracts from actual issues, but that's just my opinion.

Hmm. I would have to disagree with you there ---- to my way of thinking there is a difference between a First Lady using her 'celebrity' to highlight a certain cause such as Laura Bush with literacy and a First Lady referring to herself as 'co-president' or that she and her dh were a 'two for one' special.
