No one was arguing that people don't kill for reasons other than religion. Does that fact excuse people who kill expressly due to religion? I honestly fail to see your point.
The point is that a person is ultimately just stupid for killing for their religion...just like any other person killing for an unjustified reason. They're stupid...plain and simple. If a person finds it necessary to kill for stupid reasons, their stupidity is bigger than their cause (by default).
If you believe in God, then you must face that God accepts the killing of the innocent in His name by the powerful.
If you don't believe in God, then you have to acknowledge that the principles of some religions teach the killing of the religion's enemies. Yes, the religion's leaders either wrote those hold scriptures or were willing to put the teachings into practice. So it's men using the "belief club" of religion to justify conquest and punishment of others. It's a very old story.
The belief that government won't abuse power, and therefore can be trusted with more and more.
It is a notion that is unprovable, has many counterexamples, yet is believed by countless millions who are egged on by demagogues either unaware or uncaring of the destruction they can sow.
This clearly meets the definition of "religion"... and it happens to be the most destructive one ever unleashed on the planet.
Christians of course. The first commandment is "I Am The Lord Thy God. Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods Before Me." After that, you have no choice but to convert or kill.
It's always been an enigma with me that every religion preaches tolerance and compassion but these attributes are generally ignored by all religous followers of any stripe.
