American protestors are never beaten, or arrested for speaking out. The whole world knows that Bush encouraged us heartily to criticise him. It made him proud. ; ^ ) Cheney used to mix with the far left to show them how concerned/loving he was. Lots of banquets, hug ins. Cheney even wore a clown nose, and hippie headband to show that he was "just a regular guy."
I don't think Chavez ever needed George Bush or cheney to make an idiot of himself. I think he was able to do all that on his own. He just another attention limelight grabbing dictator with self esteem issues. But again as someone already said, just like kids, look at who he hangs with and associates with on the world scene. Speaks volumes for me.

I think that your perspective is just a slanted vision of who Chavez really is.
US media has portrayed him in a very, very negative way. But if you actually read the story of his life, there is not very much that is truely negative about him. He has actually stood up for good causes much of the time.
The US government hates him because he does not cooperate with them and he is leading a movement toward South American independance and self-sufficiency. The US government wants "democracies" that will trade resources and do whats in the US best interest.
Since Chavez stands against this, he is made to be the enemy.

I agree with you about the free speech issue. I think free speech should definitely be allowed and that's one aspect of Chavez's strategy that I don't like.
As for the rest of those things. The USA is doing much, much worse. Same things with different countries on an even broader level.
Every country is just trying to come out ahead at any cost. The USA is no different.
Many people in the USA do not think too highly of Hugo Chavez. And politicians in the US Government are always slamming him and speaking badly of him.
So I must ask. What specifically is so bad about the guy? What exactly is the reason that we should hate him?
I am jealous of him... all the power, all the money, all the ladies... why wouldn't I be mad at him? Besides his name sort of rhymes with the song that had lyrics that said "Rico Suave"... hehehe... but realistically, he is a dictator that seeks to Socialize the country... we will see how much better when "Socialism" takes place... why does the government hate Chavez? Because he won't be a slavedog to the US power... we hand him some money and we expect him to obey like a good dog... except, now he is growing a backbone... so we sent in several assassins to take him out and it didn't work... so now he's mad at us... and we are mad cause we want to rape and pillage his country economically and he's not letting us... we tried sneaking in with a "corporatist" movement but he isn't having any of that... oh well, we'll just be mad at each other until we find a new dog that will run that country... we got a big bag of treats...
