LOS ANGELES — A clothing maker with a vast garment factory in downtown Los Angeles is firing about 1,800 immigrant employees in the coming days — more than a quarter of its workforce — after a federal investigation turned up irregularities in the identity documents the workers presented when they were hired.
The firings at the company, American Apparel, have become a showcase for the Obama administration’s effort to reduce illegal immigration by forcing employers to dismiss unauthorized workers rather than through workplace raids. The firings, however, have divided opinion in California over the fallout of the new approach, especially at a time of record joblessness in the state and with a major, well-regarded employer as a target.
Heh. Wasn't there huge wave of support for American Apparel because there were "sweatshop free" or something? I sort of remember seeing that pop up on all the blogs a few years ago as they were being touted as the only 100% all American (with good salary, working conditions and benefits) clothing company around. I guess they were only partially right.

Good - 1800 new jobs openings for the LA economy. I would think creating jobs for legal residents would be considered a good thing in a time of record unemployment.

I agree, 1800 jobs just opened up for legal US citizens and residents, rather than criminals. I hope those working illegally have been deported.
But it should be noted that Obama's policy of "forcing employers to dismiss unauthorized workers rather than through workplace raids" is a concilliatory measure aimed directly at the immigration population that Democrats will be patronizing for votes come 2010/2012.
You can bet that Obama will tout something along the lines of "I have directed my Administration to STOP WORKPLACE RAIDS!" (queue massive applause here), in an effort to placate immigrants while asking for their vote. It's all smoke and mirrors, but I can see it clear as day. Wait and see.

I did a search yesterday for "American made jeans" and American Apparel popped up. I usually buy carhartt because they where American made but, not anymore.
