The relationship between President Barack Obama and the commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan has been put under severe strain by Gen Stanley McChrystal's comments on strategy for the war.
If I were Obama, I would demand the General's resignation. Generals follow policy, not make it.
Don't you think that would fuel the growing contempt the military has for him?
If indeed the President is not communicating with him well, perhaps he felt it was the only way to get his message to Obama. Personally, I don't think it was very tactful, and it certainly wont win him any favor with the White House.
How to fight the war and/or how many troops to use is NOT foreign policy. The decision to "Go and achieve X outcome in X location" is a foreign policy matter, how it happens in-theater should be left up to the experts in that field, with reasonable restrictions (no raping, pillaging, plundering). That's what we pay the folks in uniform for.
