I think the comparison would be to call fat people fat and old people old when you're talking about calling someone that is retarded, retarded.

Of course, that is not what the law is aimed at.It is about not wanting to hear a term some find objectionable used even though the person whose feelings are supposedly going be hurt is not the target and may not even be present.
Isn't is rather ridiculous to think that having the term be replaced in official publications is going to make the use of 'retard' on the street no longer hurtful to this kids mommy? Will she be able to say, if she hears it....."well, they aren't talking about my little suzie....she's no longer retarded...she's ...............whatever the new designation is for the time being.
Talk about stupid.

Maybe the mother is thinking that "retard" doesn't define her kid, that she's a human being who happens to be retarded, or whatever other term you want to apply to the condition.

Then I'd completely agree with and prefer her way of looking at it.
That has nothing to do with pushing for a law to change the designation nor will it change the kids condition.

Just one more way the minority is forcing the majority into doing or not doing something. People forget that we have rights, nobody can tell me what to think. If I think that something is retarded or gay, I am allowed.

The guy walking down the street with a sequin vest and a feather boa, gay. The idea that I'm going to have to pay more money so fat people can get training on how to stop shoving food in their faces, retarded.

The idea that words or phrases are going to be buried under legislation and possible litigation is insane. Soon they will outright tell you what you can and can't think, they're already telling you what you can't say. Theres another thread on here about "no complaint day". Now I can't complain about calling something retarded and being written a ticket? Thats gay.
