Looks like some of them will pay that price to be free. Not having to work, listen to authority, and have any responsibility.

This is a true statement. Many are mentally ill first, and turn to alcohol and drugs to cope on the streets. We used to "force" these people into institutions. Research the series of lawsuits filed by the ACLU over the last 40 years; they have the right to live on the street.

Most of them have a Post Office box so that they can collect their SSI checks.

No, it's because homeless shelters are often WORSE than being on the streets. Many people refuse to go into them because they are too hardcore and rough.

Like my dad used to say - "as long as you live under my roof...".

But there ARE die hard masochists who don't FEEL the cold because they are numb from booze and drugs.
They DON'T CARE if they are dirty or what YOU think of their appearance or hygiene.
And...if they are THAT hungry.....WHY don't they just walk into a grocery store and TAKE some food?

Fear of jail?
DOUBTFUL when you are used to the streets.

No one SHOULD be cold, dirty or hungry....unless they CHOOSE to be or are so far gone in their mental state, they only wish they were dead since nobody will hire them and give them that "hand up."
Some people commit suicide.....slowly.....and in public places.
It's just a PART of life....on this Earth.
Accept it or not.

i would say probably most homeless people probably came from abusive homes or not very good backgrounds. people tend to forget or take for granted how much good family and rearing is essential to self-empowerment or well-being. whatever lead the many homeless (not all of them) to their alcoholism or drug use varies but in the end, they are a reminder of what is wrong with a system or society as much as some of them may be wrong or ignorant. some just cannot function with the bull****, politics, lies and facades of society.

Then what's the point in funding them?

Take the funding and do something else with it.

True. Survival of the fittest applies in the urban jungle as well as in nature. In the wild the weakest animals are not seen. Nature doesn't allow for "homeless" animals shuffling around in limbo. You go to the wild and you see the healthiest, strongest animals. The rest are dead -- eaten or biodegraded with the help of ants and maggots.

In human society, it's just difficult for us to accept that because we imagine how it must be like to live that way, and we think it must be downright awful.
