You do know that trees were decorated by Pagan religions, during solstice, before and during the time Jeremiah wrote this, don't you?

Exactly. That is basically what I said. A Christmas tree is decoration. Period. Besides, they smell soooooo good!

Okay, Christmas trees are indeed worthless...but I'll still get one. I'll get it for occasion, but that doesn't make it of anything worth value (other than the simple price paid)

There are some that believe that Christmas trees are idolatrous. But that is only out of not knowing better. They take Jeremiah 10:2-4 out of context. In the text, God condemns his people for going into the forest, cutting down the trees, and carving them up and over- laying them with gold or silver. They would then fasten them with nails so that they would not totter. Although his may sound like a Christmas tree, it is not. It is condemning the use of the wood for carved images that were worshipped. This was sort of a Wal-Mart idol for those that could not afford the “solid gold†idol. It was cheaper to just cover the wooded image with gold. Anyway, Jeremiah was written 500 years before Christ’s birth. So how could it be a “Christmas†tree?

The fact of the matter is that they originated in Christian Germany about two thousand years after Jeremiah! It originated from two Christian symbols found in people’s homes at Christmas time. The first was a “Paradise Tree†an evergreen which was hung with apples which symbolized the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden. The second was a “Christmas Pyramidâ€. This was a triangular shelf holding Christmas figurines and decorated with a star! By about the 16th century the two symbols were combined for the first Christmas tree!
How ‘bout that? Tell your children about this Christian heritage!

Even though this world has used these symbols to make money, Christians should use them to make disciples. This is our holiday! Don’t curse the darkness. Instead, shine a light in it. Don’t go into a shell. Instead share the good news about the symbols of the season! It may change someone’s life.
What an excellen point you make! Great post, and Merry Christmas to you!

I think it is talking about idol worship. Not Christmas trees.
That's the recent NIV version.

KJ is not as clear... "For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe."

A translation of the 5th century (approx 390 to 405AD) Latin Vulgate:
Latin Vulgate Old Testament Bible - Jeremiah 10
quia leges populorum vanae sunt quia lignum de saltu praecidit opus manuum artificis in ascia
For the laws of the people are vain: for the works of the hand of the workman hath cut a tree out of the forest with an axe.

It's very frustrating that the infallible word of God has so many interpretations.

We do not use Christmas trees today and decorate them with any view toward any pagan rituals or beliefs. We do it to decorate our homes and remind us that it is the Christmas season. We like the way they look and smell, and to us it reminds us of the meaning of Chistmas, of Christ, the Savior.

In the secular world, Easter is a minor holiday and not widely celebrated. In Christianity, it is a major holiday for us as it represents the central point of what Christianity is all about.

Do you know that Jesus was actually born in early summer and that december has nothing to do with his birth? The catholic church turned a pagan holiday (a feast for the birthday of the sun) into Christmas.
