Tell me how exactly does this compare to being gay?
How many gay people do you know that can not vote?
Is it on the same scale?

No.

Partially due TO the civil rights movement in the 60s.

However, straight black people do have something over gays:

They can marry.

No, it was meant to point out the rediculous nature of tracing the history of homosexuality somehow and teaching it in class.....

I mean how does this work? Do we work to find the first gay colonist and tell his story and then move on to the formation of little gay cults that met outside of Salem, Mass and continue on from there?

Gays have existed throughout time. I think we can acknowledge that and leave it at that. We don't really teach the history of ANY sexuality, so why would we teach the history of homosexuality?

(I just used the name RuPaul because it's the first and only name I could think of that people would grasp that I'm talking about a gay person/tranny, whatever.... McDaniel was just a last name drawn out of a hat..... FYI... ).

Why not? It's a major part of todays culture, should we skip over the war in Iraq too?

Except homosexuality isn't all about sex.

Just look at Prop 8 in CA and all the issues it has caused, even celebrities jumped on the bandwagon to support it. Look at all the protests and gatherings for the GLBT community, it IS a major part of todays culture, you're just stuck in your ways and feel the need to discriminate against these people.

Maybe not, but is it really that important to teach the history of homosexuals in history class?

Okay, let's say that you are given the right to get married to a person of the same sex. Then yes it is a part of history and has a right to be taught in high school. I say high school, because the children are older and they are suppose to go in to more in depth teaching of our American/World history. It's a subject that is going to the Supreme Court, it has significance. The fact the Edward the whatever was gay, is a side note, not an in depth conversation.

Does being gay make you different from me, other than the fact that I can marry a person of the opposite sex? This will change. You know it will. It's just a matter of time.

And I completely agree with what you are saying.

I don't think it's relevant at all to go on a tangent about the sexuality of historical figures. I mean, Alexander the Great stuck his thing in anything that moved, but that doesn't make him any less of a huge figure in history.

The part that SHOULD be taught is the struggle for marriage rights. Which isn't over yet, but is relevant and an interesting chapter in American history.

And I do agree it needs to be taught in high schools. More mature minds so to speak.
