The liberals' longtime dream of a government-run health care system for all died Wednesday in the Senate, but Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont vowed it will return when the realization dawns that private insurance companies "are no longer needed."
The proposal's demise came as Senate Democratic leaders and the White House sought agreement with Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., to become the 60th supporter of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul — the number needed to overcome a Republican filibuster.

This result should not suprise anyone. I can certainly understand one arguing the merits and need for a single payer system although I would personally be opposed to such a system. What was not debateable was the idea that a public option or a single payer system would exist. We knew back in August this was not going to occur. It's done! The public option has died. I'm personally tired of Nancy Pelosi and some Democrats resorting to tabloid like gestures to keep the idea of the public option alive when the evidence has always suggested otherwise. Even in September, we knew they didn't have the votes and that if they were going to get anything passed, it would require compromise which meant eliminating the public option.
I mentioned Sanders because he is the only politician who officially declares himself a socialist...
Theoretically,he is to the left of the Progressive Caucus...

Also, nationalized heath insurance is not the same thing as nationalized, government-run health care. They are two very different things. Do you conflate them out of ignorance or dishonesty?
I hope that the people of Vt realise that they no longer need Sanders...
Sanders is very popular in Vermont and has been for a long time. Bear in mind he runs as a socialist and has been winning for years.
From what I can tell the only Senators who the spotlight is shining on right now that are likely to loose their seats are Reid and Lieberman. The latter has his approval rating around 43 Approve 49 Disapprove with the vast majority of his supporters being Rs whose votes he will not get in an election against a real R candidate...something that was absent in the 2006 election.
The only way for it to be Constitutional, would be to have no private healthcare, period. It would all have to be government, with government employees and your taxes pay for it in full.

For mandates I am inclined to agree though the government has been successful in stopping people from buying things. The only reason it works with Auto insurance is due to state laws. It would be interesting to see what legal back flips the government will try to get the interstate commerce clause to cover this and whether it will be successful.
So this will be yet another failure of Obama's?????
