All those critizing Japan for whaling and consuming whale meat...you do realize the liberal utopia of Norway does the same thing. Whale is on the menu in a number of resturants there.
The ban on whaling was one thing the entire world (with a few exceptions) actually agreed on in 1986. This is one of the rare instances where I'm on the side of the hippies and would love to see them start slaughtering these "scientists".
Whales and several other marine mammals are very special animals and the japanese are freaks. I know it's a culture thing, but they're still freaks. If you have any doubt, check out some japanese porn. freaks!!
I don't care whethe the Japanese are "freaks", as you say. But, if harvesting whales is a "culture thing", it's time they made some changes. We are all depleting and destroying ocean life.

this was/is a hot topic in Australia, due to the Japanese at times attempting to whale in Australian territorial waters in Antarctica.(Australians, mostly are against whaling)
reports out of Japan have shown that whale is indeed on the menu (not to westerners though).
The are using "research" as an excuse to get around the law. Nice people, huh?

GregW, something is wrong with either you, or with me. I'm starting to agree with you. That's twice in one day. (gave you a rep for the other post)
I guess if it weren't Japan, but Iran or some other 'rogue' state on the axis of evil, there would long have been boycotts, sanctions or whatever. But an industrialized country can get away with almost anything. Double standards...
I may actually like whales more than I like humans. No whales have ever tried to kill me. More than a few humans have.
I would be asking myself what am I doing that a few humans have tried to kill me. Am I offending that many people am I doing some shady. What is wrong with me that more then 1 person has tried to kill you.
Whales and dolphins are amazing animals, they are so human. Highly intelligent, social, individual, with emotions just like we have them, they love, cry, play, talk, sing, etc.
Those incidents happened in a land far, far away a long, long time ago called Vietnam. I was interfering with their life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for a couple of corrupt governments in Saigon and Washington.

It's pure hypocrisy for anyone who eats any meat to tell someone else not to eat the meat they like.
I'm not a big fan of whaling as I think whales are impressive creatures, but, as long as it's kept sustainable (non-endangered species hunted, such as the abundant minke), it's their right. People hunt whales even in the U.S. (Natives in Alaska, and once again when the permits go through the Makah tribe). Whales are impressive but I don't hold them as equal with humans. Much of their brain is devoted simply to staying afloat.
Sea Shepherd is a terrorist group. Like or hate whaling, there's no right to ram ships, throw acid at people, launch various projectiles, etc., in such a dangerous place. They've also been pursued by authorities in Canada for such acts as breaking ice up under seal hunters' feet. The Japanese are following the letter of the law. Sea Shepherd has inadvertently caused the IWC proposal to bring back commercial whaling, and they've increased support in Japan for whaling. As the saying goes...you catch more flies with honey than vinegar...
