I was a bagger in high school and I never received a tip --- but then I was paid. I never tipped a bagger and never realized that this would be expected of me.
And, why wouldn't you tip a bagger, Who?
How old are you? Too young to member when this was common practice?
I'm too young to remember but I know I've seen signs at grocery stores mostly down in Georgia telling people not to tip baggers. So I guess that's why the signs are there. Now that I think of it I have been to a grocery store that encouraged people to tip baggers.

Well, junior, I've been grocery shopping for 45 years or more and have NEVER heard of tipping baggers, nor been stupid enough to need their services......how about you?
Because my spouse and I are perfectly capable of bagging our own groceries. Waitpeople have a wage, it sucks but it's a wage....and I tip them for waiting on me correctly.
Slavery is against the law.......
Dude its not slavery. The kids are working for tips just like servers. Also you know in most states servers only receive a wage of $2.13 an hour because they do make so much from tips.

Yes, working without being paid is slavery.
What? Poor old WallyWorld can't AFFORD to pay baggers??
Save at Walmart ...by the customer paying the baggers?????
Bringing wages down to rock bottom helps the economy? (Well, ya, it helps the economy of the Wealthy).
I hope one of those teens slips and falls and hurts himself and sues the crap out of WalMart so that WalMart can then understand the liability they incur by allowing people who are not employees or contractors to conduct business on their property, not covered by their insurance policies. And I hope that teen wins a settlement in the millions. That will teach WalMart an expensive lesson about how cheap is always expensive.
Leave it to stupid ass Walmart to allow such a stupid thing.
The article states that they're covered by Walmart's insurances so I don't think they would sue Walmart if they fell they'd get workers comp or just be covered by the insurance like any other employee.

Not to mention that if my grocery store started doing this, I'd switch grocery stores. When I shop for groceries, I want to pay at the cashier and that's that. If they want to have someone take my groceries to the car then it should be a free service like at Publix in Florida. If not, then I'll push the cart out myself. The last thing I want to worry about when grocery shopping is finding a couple bucks for a tip for someone to walk out to my car (which I have to do anyway, I might as well take the groceries with me, it's not a big deal).

If you'd read the article, you'd have noted that Wal-Mart insures the baggers, not just when the baggers are on the premises, but also when the bagger is en-route to and from the store. Which is more than the other retailers in Mexico can say.

You're not paying them a salary you're tipping. Haven't you heard of tipping? You tip all kinds of people for their services. You tip hairdressers, cab drivers, waiters, delivery people etc. It's just that in Mexico you also tip grocery baggers and I imagine that they make a good living doing so. I know they do at the PX here in America.

It must be a state-by-state thing, according to their laws, then.
But I also grew up a Navy brat, so alot of it I may have seen on base, too.
I just know I've seen tipping alot years ago, and couldn't understand why you hadn't, is all.
To the member that made the remark about slipping and hurting oneself;
1. too bad you wish harm on someone else
2. if Wal-mart isn't breaking any laws, I'm sure their liabilities are covered too

OOOOohhh, we're better than Mexico! What an achievement to brag about!
Let's compare ourselves right to the bottom.....
