Senegal doesn't have much of anything to give away and President Abdoulaye Wade made that offer purely for political spectacle. I can only pray that this African hippo is out in 2012. He is one of many remaining embarrassments in West Africa. There are currently Haitians studying in Senegal but there has been no mass resettlement of Haitians to Senegal.

A different language and culture would pose a challenge for Hatian immigrants, but it would be a challenge that a few brave Hatians should try.

It might be a wonderful start at a new life for people that lost alot. It's admirable that the Senegalese would extend this offer. Hopefully it turns out to be a win for both nations.

I don't think the official languages are different. And i'm not so sure that the cultures are all that different either. Guess they'll find out though...soon enough. That is, for the takers.

Alot of African countries being former European colonies do have western/modern cultures in the cities, out in the country it's probably a little different.

Must be a real beautiful place to see, I had a friend where I used to work that used to tell me that Mali would be a great place to visit.

I'm not too knowledgable about Senegal, but a few places like Nigeria does have religious strife Christian/Muslim.

It would help if Senegal had some assistance programs for immigrants in place though. If I was Hatian I'd definitely consider it, it would be a change for all that earthquake damage they saw back home.

Since Senegal is on mainland Africa there might be opportunities to migrate out if things don't work out.

Pretty amazing offer. Grace and generosity are so rare these days. This will be fascinating to see play out.

Interesting that Africa has many problems, but some of the great humanitarian sentiments have come from there. I recall the truth and reconciliation committee of the African National Conference, where people forgave their oppressors as one of the finest things of the 20th century.

I hope it was not just hot air, and that some Haitians will go and build new lives for themselves.

That's cool, I wished I had the extra cash and time at the moment to see alot of different places.

If you go, post some pics when you get back.

The cultures are very different chiefly because Senegal is 90% muslim and, though the official language is French, the most widely spoken language in Senegal is Wolof.

Nothing came of Wade's invitation: "No invitation to relocate Haitians in Senegal" - says Haiti Minister - Afrik-news.com : Africa news, Maghreb news - The african daily newspaper. But Mali is a great place to visit as well as Senegal. However these are not great places to live. Abdoulaye Wade made an agreement with the EU to accept any illegal African deported from European territory. There are many non-Senegalese roaming around Senegal for that reason. There is no "assistance program" for them other than about $10 US and there would probably be little/no help for Haitian immigrants.
