"It's not a cost cutting measure, its really an investment in enhancing our demo program," he said. Cornell added that Shopper Events plans to hire "roughly the same number of people" cut, and said Sam's Club workers are invited to apply for those positions.

In a memo to employees, Cornell said eligible workers will receive severance pay and benefits, and that the company will help them find opportunities at other Sam's Clubs and in Walmart stores, in addition to Shopper Events positions. The cuts come as many Americans had hoped job losses would abate as the economy slowly recovers. However, analysts said Sunday that while this marks Wal-Mart Stores' largest job cut, they expect many employees to be picked up by Shopper Events, so the net effect on the economy probably won't be that bad.
The outsourcing company used by Wal-Mart will be hiring an equal number of employees as those being laid off.
Wal-Mart has outsourced one of it's functions to a company which specializes in that area, and will it help Sams Club stores become more competitive against BJ's and Costco.
Do you have a problem with Wal-Mart making changes to improve it's operations?
I guess I'm taking the bait here but those unions did wonders for the American auto industry huh???
Sarcasm intended.....
Actually they did wonders. They allowed for legislation to force taxpayers to shoulder the burden for their members' benefit. It pays to be a union member I suppose!

If Wal-Mart completely went under like Circuit City, then EVERYONE would have been without a job. I hate to see folks laid off but if a business isn't making the profits, they have the rights to reduce labor.
The cuts represent about 10 percent of the warehouse club operator's 110,000 staffers across its 600 stores. That includes 10,000 workers, mostly part-timers, who offer food samples and showcase products to customers. The company also eliminated 1,200 workers who recruit new members.
If this involves who I think it does, it is very sad. In my area, the only people involved in offering food samples and showcasing products were the elderly and disabled. That job might have been what kept them out of poverty.
maybe they should look into windmills and solar panels. china makes all that stuff too. if you dont mind a lot of lead and other toxins
