And now they're surprised that it backfired - the term has come to be associated with a lot of moderate and quite popular policies.

That's what happens when you don't think your cunning plan all the way through.
It is so time for a 'Blackadder marathon

Harry Truman noted this about the Republicans in 1952. Some things never change....
The real Republican campaign is not going to be fought on the issues. The Republicans are going to wage a campaign of phony propaganda. They are going to try what we might call the "white is black" and the "black is white" strategy....

The Republicans are all set to try this "white is black" technique. And this is the way it will work. First of all, they will try to make people believe that everything the Government has done for the country is socialism. They will go to the people and say: "Did you see that social security check you received the other day—you thought that was good for you, didn't you? That's just too bad! That's nothing in the world but socialism. Did you see that new flood control dam the Government is building over there for the protection of your property? Sorry—that's awful socialism! That new hospital that they are building is socialism. Price supports, more socialism for the farmers! Minimum wage laws? Socialism for labor! Socialism is bad for you, my friend. Everybody knows that. And here you are, with your new car, and your home, and better opportunities for the kids, and a television set—you are just surrounded by socialism!"

Now the Republicans say, "That's a terrible thing, my friend, and the only way out of this sinkhole of socialism is to vote for the Republican ticket."

Wow, the Republican party is still so stuck in the 1950s

Many Americans think that government oversight and regulation is Socialism.

No wonder democrats don't have a problem with bank take overs, health care take overs, auto take overs, government expansion at the expense of the private sector, pay czars, etc, etc, etc.
Newsflash: Republicans view "socialism" for corporations, insurance companies, and war profiteers as a good thing. What else is new.

No wonder Republicans don't have a problem with Halliburton, tax cheaters who stuff their cash overseas on secret bank accounts at the expense of hard-working Americans, huge bonuses for corporate executives who took bail-out money, death panels in the form of insurance companies, etc., etc, etc.

None of those are elements of a socialist nation.

Socialism is better than the criminal enterprise currently referred to as "capitalism"

Oh, thats right, socialism only applies to the corporate sector. The rest of us get to enjoy "capitalism".

There has not been any "capitalism" in the USA since 1935.

What you are objecting to are the abuses of usurers and limited liability corporations - which are NOT capitalism, btw.

(Adam Smith was a shill for usurers. In his book, "The Wealth of Nations", he basically apologized for the shearing done by usurers.)

A farmer who absolutely owns his land is enjoying capitalism.
A worker who absolutely owns the fruits of his labor is enjoying capitalism.
A factory owner who absolutely owns his factory is enjoying capitalism.

Capitalism only means the PRIVATE ownership of the tools of production - land, labor, tools, etc.

On the other hand, predators like usurers, call themselves "capitalists" to hide their vile trade.

(For over 3500 years, usurers have been denounced. Every religion denounces and condemns usurers. Ezekiel 18:13 KJV states that they're under a death sentence! Of course, usurers are not nice people...)

Today?
Fail to pay your socialist dues, and watch how fast the Collective State takes your property, without just compensation.
That's right - no enumerated socialist owns private property.

--------
CAPITALISM - An economic system in which the means of production, distribution and exchange are privately owned and operated for private profit.
WEBSTER'S DICTIONARY

From the Communist manifesto:
"In this sense, the theory of the Communists may be summed up in the single sentence: Abolition of private property."

"PRIVATE PROPERTY - As protected from being taken for public uses, is such property as belongs absolutely to an individual, and of which he has the exclusive right of disposition. Property of a specific, fixed and tangible nature, capable of being in possession and transmitted to another, such as houses, lands, and chattels."
- - - Black's Law dictionary, sixth ed., p.1217

Amendment V, US Constitution 1789
… nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

I trust the government more than I do big business which is accountable to nobody. But I don't really trust anybody much.
