I'm wondering if, for people who support organized school prayer, if they would still support it if the daily prayers were done in Hebrew and were from the Jewish faith? Or do they only support school prayer if the prayers are Christian based?

When they say prayer in schools, they mean Christian Prayer.

Good thread, by the way.

No they do not mean Christian prayer. They mean give kids the chance to pray to whomever they choose. Prayer in school to me is about a time of reflection. Now I am against this because I would not want learning time being taken away for it.

There are people advocating for religious prayer in public schools?

Can't they do this now? Can't kids pause and take a moment of reflection during their school day?

I am talking about organized school prayer....

Cyber Queen, they "prayer in schools" when I went was readings out of the King James Bible.

Can you imagine the backlash if quotes from the Koran were read in school???

It's naive to think when "prayer in schools" is referenced, it means anything but Christian prayer.

Not necesssary in public school. These are things that are personal and the responsibility of the parents. What if the kid is not raised to believe in a higher authority on an esoteric level?

School is for learning, not praying. If you want your child to have a religious education, send them to a parochial school.

I'm not an advocate for prayer during school, but why would anyone even suggest it be done in a language foreign to the majority of schoolkids? The only thing I would consider being acceptable would be a short amount of time (less than a minute or so) for "silent prayer" or personal reflection. The kids can pray to whatever god they want or none at all.

Then they can choose not to pause and reflect on their day in relation to any higher being. The school takes no position on whether or not you pray during the day.

This thread is about prayer organized by the school. There's nothing wrong with independent prayer but as soon as the school system gets involved it becomes a problem.

Try to imagine the uproar that would occur if a Muslim principal decided to read from the Qur'an during an assembly.
