He promised to simplifiy it last year around this time. What has been done to make it simpler? Maybe its just me, but he hasn't worked on much other than the health care bills, both of which add more hoops and hurdles to filing taxes.

This is one of the issues that I was hoping for some change on. Did he forget about it? Or have I missed something?

First off, yes, it is just you. If you think health care is the only thing Obama has been doing you just haven't been paying attention.

Second, the tired call, which we hear just about every year, to "simplify the tax code" is utterly without substance. The economy is complicated, the tax code has been developed and modified to achieve many different governmental, societal, and fiscal goals, so it should be no surprise that it's somewhat complicated. That said, for the majority of filers, whose income is all or almost all in the form of wages, there is no reason they can't prepare and file their own taxes.

When we hear conservatives call for "simplifying" the tax code, it's generally a code word for making it less progressive, or, in other words, to put more of the burden of maintaining the government on lower earning people.

Third, since none of the health care bills have passed, and we don't know what form they will take if and when they do, you can't claim with a straight face that anything has been done to "add more hoops and hurdles" to filing taxes.

I wish they would simplify corporate tax. It is ridiculous what small business owners must go through just to cut pay checks, reconciliations, etc. I lose 10-12 hours a month easily on just that and I have a pretty simple business with few employees. I do agree that the tax structure in general is an overly complex system that produces a lot of wasted time and money.
