KRCG: University of Missouri police have arrested two white naval midshipmen for spreading cotton balls in front of the campus’ black culture center.
Senior Zachary Tucker, 21, and freshmen Sean Fitzgerald, 19, were arrested Tuesday about 7:30 p.m., after authorities received an anonymous tip.
A stupid, tasteless act that deserves a first-class butt kicking, but not felony arrest. Laws that are taken too far can result in a backlash and repeal. I'd hate to see it happen to this law.
Kick 'em out of the academy yes, but felony arrests are going way overboard. If this overreaction follows through then sure those stupid kids are going to have real high opinions of black people when all is said and done, Unless the world has gone mad, I really don't think that's the intended effect of hate crime legislation.
OMG.
Pranks are played all the time on campus; their Captain did not have a problem with it.
Seriously! A felony - a hate crime - kicked out - careers ruined.
It's totally ridiculous IMO.
All this touch feely, walking on eggshells to be politically correct is out of hand. We can't have fun anymore.
Hate crime laws enhance criminal charges. As far as I know, there's no such thing as a standalone "hate crime".
They are being charged with tampering, and along that also with a "hate crime".
I agree with others that this is hate crime legislation going completely overboard. It appears that "hate crime" can be applied to just about anything.
Tasteless and thoughtless what they did, yes, but the media is painting it like these two covered the culture center in racial epithets then set it ablaze.
I think a misdemeanor, fine, and some form of community service should suffice on the legal end of things. Felony hate crime charge is a bit overboard, unless of course their antics led to the injury of another, or arson.
