The news just made my day. Such a bold and effective first step in tackling AZ's serious illegal immigration problems. Jan Brewer has some balls.

LOL...You guys think enforecement will do anything to stop illegal immigration? The reason they come is because YOU pay them to work. Money doesn't grow on trees. Grass doesn't cut itself, oranges don't sell themselves. THey will continue to come as long as the same hyocrites pay for their labor. Until we can accept that fact that WE are greedy and look for and utilize cheap tax free labor, WE will..The best law would be to crack down on those that pay illegals. It's like drugs, do you go after the users/illegals or the dealers/greedy Americans that keep them coming back for more? We know the answer but only s few will admit it. It's more popular amongst closet racist to blame the "Mesicins"..

I posted this link in another thread about Brewer/AZ immigration law. Obama is already pushing Congress to close the loopholes so other states can't follow AZ's lead.

What will Washington do about Arizona's Immigration law?

Quote:
He [Obama] also urged Congress to proceed with legislation, in an effort to preempt actions by other state legislatures.
Quote:
Obama won 68 percent of the Hispanic vote in his presidential election, and it’s a constituency he wants to hold.
Quote:
Democrats hope they can bring along at least a few Senate Republicans both in crafting legislative language and in reaching the 60 votes needed to defeat an expected filibuster.

So far, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) of South Carolina is the only Republican senator working with Democrats on a bill. On Tuesday, Obama reached out to several other Senate Republicans, with no success.

Move there if you like living in a police state. The law won't stand up in a supreme court challenge and it will surely end up there.

You guys should be careful what you wish for.

Yes, on one hand, we absolutely need to do something to stop illegal immigration. I don't think it's fair for illegals to come and get all the benefits without paying their share of taxes. We need a comprehensive solution that starts with real border control (hasn't happened under Democrats or Republicans, by the way).

But as conservatives who supposedly care about Constitutional rights and subduing an intrusive government, you should realize that they just gave the government in Arizona a LOT of power: the power to basically stop and interrogate a segment of people for pretty much any reason they come up with.

Practically speaking, what is "probably cause" in this case? Looking like a hispanic? This may be the first law that effectively legalizes racial profiling.

Today it's the hispanics. But once that precedent is set for allowing cops to detain people at a whim, then how long do you think it will be until you're the ones who are being stopped and detained for not having your "documentation" with you?

It's tough to keep the Constitutional principles intact when you start to apply it differently based on race. If you want to live in a fascist state, then this is a real step in that direction.

You have that wrong. They're not granting them the power to stop someone just because they "feel like" it. The police must be actively stopping them for a reason (e.g., traffic violation, tickets, warrants, drunk driving, loitering, panhandling, etc.)

There has to be a VALID LEGAL reason to stop said person. Once this person has been stopped it is then not ILLEGAL for the policeman to ask for a VALID LEGAL ID, and if the policeman has reason to suspect / doubt, that this person is a legal citizen of the US they have the right to ask for documents stating as much.
