State hood for PR has been on the ballot since '94. They will never become a State...one we don't want to take on their crushing debt, even though they are a commonwealth. They don't want to become a full-State. They can't agree on the methodology on how to do it.
I am of Puerto Rican hertiage, and can tell you, this is a very touchy subject. The people are very divided on this issue. A small % of the pop. wants independence. Puerto Ricans feel they have contributed and sacrificed a lot to the US, just be thrown out on it's own.
The remaining pop are pretty much SPLIT. Split for continued Commonwealth status, and Statehood.
The CW people say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And, they fear becoming a state will result in the loss of the Spanish traditions, including Spanish as the main language.
People for Statehood, feel because we have been part of the US so long, have fought wars for the US, are citizens at birth, why not receive full benefits of a State.
This has been a very heated issue in PR for decades.

I think that the next referendum needs to have either statehood or independence as the only options. Continued commonwealth status has cons for both the US and PR.
It would surely be 3 more electoral votes for the Democrat candidate every year.
This is actually not true. First of all, Puerto Rico is not just a sparesly populated island. It has 4 million people which would be like 8 or 9 electoral votes. That's bigger than a lot of states. And there are both Republicans and Democrats on the island. Like their current governor is a Republican.

That would be the last thing that the REPUBLICANS want! Or have you forgotten all of Newt Gringrich's and Dick Armey's underhanded deals with (IIRC) American Samoa. By being US territories they can legally put "Made in USA" on their products, but those two d-bags made sure that they are exempted from US labor laws so the people can be paid slave wages, get forced abortions etc. Study your recent history a bit kiddies.
BTW, even some Rs admit that it may be time to add more stars. Most Americans today have always lived under 50, yet we, our parents and grandparents and beyond all saw additions.
Well, if Puerto Rico becomes a state, what of the flag? We'd have to have 51 stars. How would you lay it out so it looked good?
It's not like they've never had to change the flag before. 6 alternating rows of 9 and 8 stars renders a decent-looking US flag.
And even if it didn't, you can't deny people statehood just because it messes up the flag
