DC has opted to handle internal security loose, if one slips by it was not a terrorist attack, if they catch it-- it was. since we have no real penalities in this country for crime, detention only, there is really no bonafide deterrent to terrorism.
algeria and turkey have not much terrorism, there is a reason.

Who cares about check lists and little pieces of paper. Who sold that guy his ticket? The village orf? Rainman?

An incident with a bomb occurs in Times Square. After that, a middle eastern looking man buys a one way ticket to Pakistan shortly before the plane is due to take off. He pays cash and he has no luggage. That should have sent up some red flags. I would have thought the people of NYC were a little more savvy than that.

Oh well, luck counts!!!
Faisal Shahzad was under surveillance at his home since they traced the SUV VIN to the girl from whom he bought it. They somehow lost him in traffic (news is being kind of vague about how that happened, lol). He bought his ticket by phone on the way to the airport and paid cash for it when he got there. He'd been placed on the no-fly list six hours before but the ticket counter didn't have the updated list. At the last minute before takeoff, the passenger list is sent to Washington as a matter of routine, and the name came up and the flight was halted when it was on the taxiway, second in line for takeoff.

Really? And what exactly does Obama have to do with it? And what exactly is an "Obama type"?

Did we get 9/11 for electing "Bush types" into office?

We are more lucky that it failed rather than he got caught trying to leave the country.

I imagine this is great learning fodder for the real terrorists. They see just how US officials react and how responsive the system is. Think about that..maybe this bomb was never meant to detonate.

Oh sure!

With Obama, it's incompetence - with Bush it's deliberate!

Right!

They've been doing that kind of thing for years (testing reactions/potential areas/levels of security.) And so do our own people.

Every once in a while, esp around the NYC area and I'm sure in other large population centers, you hear that there's a package or a backpack left somewhere, and they close off the street and bring in the bomb squad and it turns out to be a bag of dirty laundry or other worthless items.

Sometimes that's them, and sometimes that's law enforcement, testing reactions and response details. Sometimes it's just a bag of dirty laundry.
