Every economist I saw this morning, even those on Fox News, said that the unemployment number went up, because those who had previously dropped out of the job market, are returning now that hiring numbers are improving.
People were looking for jobs as their unemployment ran out, only to then have them extended.
Tell me how an individual is supposed to pro-actively know that the hiring numbers are going to improve for April, thereby deciding to go out and look for work, thereby increasing the unemployment numbers...
The U.S. jobless rate rose to 9.9% in April, the first increase in three months, but the government’s broader measure of unemployment ticked up for the third month in a row, rising 0.2 percentage point to 17.1%.

Obviously they keep an eye on Moster and Dice.com and talk to their headhunters and see more openings.

Just three stories on a quick google search that say the economy is getting better.
What, you don't watch the news?
And no, its not when their unemployment check runs out. What happens is that you're on unemployment so long, that you can't find a job. Then, your benefits run out, so you quit looking for a job. When the news or personal observation leads you to think that the economy is getting better, then they RETURN to the unemployment office, and put their names back in the pool.
That makes the numbers of "unemployed" go up. I think the term should be "job seeking unemployed" because there are a crap load of people out there who aren't looking, yet.
I thought it was a typo this morning when I read that "more new jobs created; jobless rate jumps to 9.9%"
Joy and gloom in the same sentence ? I had to read it twice and then read the article.
Was it a happy article because more jobs created or a gloom article because unemployment jumped ?
Food stamp rolls have been creating new records every month as more and more apply.
Reading between the lines it says that all these new jobs people are getting are just not cutting it anymore. Low wage jobs replacing the lost high wage jobs which have left the country.
We'll be a nation of Walmart slaves on food stamps and medicaid.

That wouldnt be the definition of someone who returned to the work force.. Someone NOT looking for work, wouldnt be keeping an eye on Monster, or Dice..
