My 5th grader came home from school with this poem given to her by her teacher. The poem is representative of what she is being taught about our country and its leaders:
How to be Thomas Jefferson
by Barry Lane
Write like an angel.
Live in your mind.
Have your heart broken many times.
Declare all men equal,
and never release your 200 slaves.
Buy lots of real estate from Frenchmen
without looking at it.
Live beyond your means
and owe lots of money.
Never finish the house
that years later will appear
on the back side of a nickel.
I don't find it funny and I don't think its appropriate to be given to a fifth grader. It is only one example of many in which I have seen the school make a mockery of our country, its leaders, history, flag, etc. Is it any wonder that we have a growing nation of citizens who seem to lack a sense of pride in our country and are so overridden with a sense of guilt that they cave in to every piece of politically correct coersion thrown at them? Sad. I find it sad. Is this how you want your children taught? Is this how you want your tax dollars used?
There is no reason that you should be upset. There is nothing wrong with opposing views and looking at reality. This would be a good opportunity to have a discussion with you child stating your point of view, but you shouldn't disregard other ideas.

Censor much?
Let's burn some books!
Who said anything about censoring and banning books?
I would bet that this same teacher never bothered to teach the positive aspects of Thomas Jefferson like his important role in the creation of our Constitution. Like I said in a previous post, teaching critically means teaching all sides not just the negative side.

Assuming facts not in evidence.
It seems you would like to believe that public education is "Anti-American" and oppressing your more conservative viewpoints so you are ASSUMING facts to justify that stance.

Can you prove this? You are assuming that all this teacher is doing is picking out the bad things when in reality you have never seen their curriculum.
There is good and bad in everyone. Jefferson did many wonderful things, but he is not a god and should not be put on a pedestal as one. There is nothing wrong in showing flaws. I think it is a good lesson that even people who are not perfect can do extrodinary things.
It's a push to be more global and less nationalistic.
Global citizens, global economy, global labor force, global companies. The youth of today will be taught to be global citizens of tomorrow.
It's way more than that. It is the progressive agenda to ruin America through the youth. Once the pride in the Nation is wiped out, they can collapse it and try to build their socialist world governed utopia which will ultimatley lead to communism or some sort of facism where people will be getting murdered by the govt.

As I said before, pointing out factual pros and cons is appropriate; MOCKERY is not. Not for 10 year olds. A child is still forming an identity, part of which is learning about the positive aspects of one's country, state, school and family with which they identify, and also learning GENTLY that none of these things are perfect. But, they do not need to be presented with mockery of them.
Suppose a child had an alcoholic father. Would you teach the child about it with a poem,
You're in a Funk
Cause your Dad's a Drunk...
Or would it be more appropriate to discuss the factual reality of the situation presenting the positive traits of the kid's dad along with the negative facts.
I think it is quite obvious that many, many posters on this site are government sheep. I've never in my life seen a single place so full of Anti-Americanism and actually support the downfall of this country.
So apparently is only convenient to call people "activists" when they're judges you hear people tell you to say that about, but when the truth is set before your child, you want to manipulate the "facts" and history to represent an outcome YOU find acceptable to you.
Talk about being an activist.
Is it controversial? Sure. Is it true? Yes. Is that ALL Jefferson will be known for or the sum of his whole existence in America's history? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Instead of looking at this as a teaching opportunity to discuss the failings and shortcomings of one of the great minds of our Countries founding, and in addition discuss ALL that he accomplished in establishing our Republic and his service to it; you chose instead to whine and opine for the good ole days of being lied to and mislead. Of being assuaged and manipulated into a false history and a mis-characterization of Jefferson's opinions by those who have no intent to live up to his standards or act in accordance with Jefferson's principles or actions, other than to end up like he did.
Before strengthening the Republic you have to have an honest and actual accounting of it's short-comings and faults. Only through them, can you build on it's greatness and ideals.
No it's not. It's the failure of American parents to get involved in their child's school, to review teaching plans, to participate in the PTA, to vote for School Boards. It is this general "I'll go on a public website, complain about what is going on, and take no personal responsibility." It's a failure to have a family gathering around the table to ensure that the moral ethics you desire to be in your children are instilled in your children by YOU.
I am looking forward to the downfall of the fascist state that has been created by the neoconservatives over the last forty years. I am actively working to destroy the Raygun Retrenchment to the 1890's. We need to return to being one country instead of one country for the hyper wealthy and barely sustainable debt for the rest of us. I guess that makes me a really old fashioned conservative.
Schools should teach the bad and the good and how to tell the difference. Anything else is propoganda and mind control.
