Since Americans are so tied to their automobiles, would it be possible and profitable for Amtrak to offer a service in which both you and your car ride to your final destination? This could be offered on certain select routes as a trial run. Also, couldn't there be a partnership between Amtrak and Greyhound? Set up Greyhound stations attached to Amtrak stations so that when you get to your final stop, you can then take an Amtrak the rest of the way since Amtrak doesn't go everywhere. Together they could offer a packaged deal.
That was tried before in the 1970's when they had trains with just the type of service you mentioned. I know the service was available on the Eastern Seaboard from New York to Florida. I don't think the service is still available.

if it puts people to work it is stimulus, those people would otherwise be unemployed so it's a win win. rather give it to them than fat cats who will send the money to China

I see loads of road projects being paid for by the stimulus so why not some rail projects?

It runs form Lorton, Virginia to Sanford, Florida. 2 Trains daily.
How so , its a great investment. Seeing that the Northeastern Network is used by 80,000 daily intercity wise and about 9 million commuter train / bus wise which feed into the network. Bridges are near collapse , along with Tunnels and stations are in need of a upgrade. This all kinda will have an affect on the economy the US , because Major companies use Amtrak to shuttle there employees all over the Northeast. This is considered a small project , NYC is currently building 30 billion $ of new Subways and Regional Rail upgrades. My state is building about 40 $ billion over the next 10-30 years. About 10 billion is UC now. With all the wasteful spending this country does , this is actually a good investment since it will help this region's economy rebound faster. Seeing that the Northeast and Mid Atlantic produce about 30% of the Nations GDP. A more upgraded Northeastern Network means you won't have to give subsides in the future. Seeing that almost all the Northeastern lines don't need a subside is a start , but we plan on expanding the network , to connect all the cities.
About time we became serious about rail passenger travel.
This is a far better use of government funding than ANY of the wars we have indulged in since WW2. We have wasted trillions on war and spent so little on decent infrastructure. If we had spent the money on rail we would have had fast, efficient and quick transport between cities over the entire country. The entire system could have been powered by nuclear electricity and not have needed imported oil.
If you want examples of what can be accomplished with government support just look at the European and Japanese systems.
Just think of driving the interstate highways without the overcrowding and without long haul trucking.

If you want it pay for it yourself. Why should people in the western half of the country have to pay for your wet dream transportation system.
For the same reason we Easterners pay for their wet dream military spending.
