Here in Ohio, we currently recycle paper, plastic and aluminum cans by taking them to nearby recycle bins. Are these available in Vero Beach, or is there only the option of using a recycling company that collects items curbside (and, inexplicably, probably charges to do so) ?

Can only comment how it is done in Port St. Lucie. They do curbside recycling and the charge is all inclusive with your basic garbage pick up that comes with your yearly tax bill.

Town picks up recyclables curbside once a week at no charge, (included in taxes). Also, there is a transfer station where you can bring anything, including recyclables, also free of charge.

Thanks for the info ! In Columbus when we lived there, you had to arrange for a curbside pickup recycling company separate from the trash pickup, and pay them a monthly fee. That always seemed odd since they are making money off what you give them to recycle, so why do you have to pay them to take it ? Anyway, if the fee is already part of the taxes, that makes it easier. By the way, out here in the country we pay almost $20 a month to a trash pickup company, so it is not part of our taxes.

PS - Also on a recycling note, we had our first CFL bulb die of old age this week, and of course you can't put those in the trash because of the mercury in them. I found out that Lowes and Home Depot have free recycling bins for CFLs. I do wonder how many people aren't aware of the mercury danger, and just pitch the bulbs in the trash !
