I think "Port" sounds a lot better than "Starboard".

From what I've heard, the original development company (GCI or something like that) used to name all their developments in Florida "Port" something or another. I think Port St. Joe is another development here in Florida that they had. As far as I know, and it ain't much....Port St. Lucie was never a "port".

Some but not all developments were named "Port......" . Palm Bay for instance was a GDC project but then again Port Charlotte was too.

Palm Bay was actually here before GDC. They bought land South of the original Palm Bay,called it Port Malabar. Their first houses were along Port Malabar Blvd and it was the extreme Southern part of the city. They built a system of roads( about 90 square miles) that were eventually annexed into the city of Palm Bay. Their first developments were small sort of cheaply built subdivisions that they provided city water and sewer too. The old part of Palm Bay (mostly the streets along the river on US1 and Palm Bay Road) got their city water from Melbourne.
They marketed their lots and homes mostly to people in the NE so probably named them Port something to sound like an exciting place to enter life in Florida.

Actually the first job I applied for in Florida was at GDC Visitor Center(building at corner of US1 and Port Malabar Blvd)just in case I didn't get hired as a teacher. Basically the job was to meet people and take them out to see the land they had purchased sight unseen and out in the middle of no where. Didn't take the job. Babcock Street was still a dirt road south of Port Malabar when I moved here and basically the only thing on Palm Bay road was Harris and the Sun Bank. Rest was a few houses and cows. A Winn Dixie and an Eckerds were the only stores in town. You went to Melbourne for everything.

St. Lucie is the Patron Saint of bad government officials. That is why so many live here. Hence the port of call for bad politicians.
